How to Use ICANReady — A Step-by-Step Guide
ICANReady is a document preparation tool that helps NDIS participants, carers, and Support Coordinators prepare for the I-CAN v6 support needs assessment. You describe your daily life and support needs in plain language — ICANReady structures that information into a professional preparation document across all 12 I-CAN domains, ready to download as a PDF.
This guide walks you through every step of the process.
Before you begin: ICANReady is a preparation tool, not an official assessment. The document you produce is for your own use to help you prepare for your formal I-CAN v6 assessment with an accredited assessor. It does not replace that assessment or guarantee any particular NDIS funding outcome.
What you will need
- An email address (for verification only — no account registration required)
- 15 to 25 minutes to complete your descriptions
- Notes or observations about the person's daily life and support needs (helpful but not required)
Step 1: Verify your email
Go to icanready.com/start.
Enter your email address and click Send verification code. Check your inbox for a 6-digit code and enter it to verify. This takes less than a minute.
Your email is used only to protect against misuse — it is not used for marketing without your consent, and your case data is stored in your browser, not linked to your email address on our servers.
Important: Please do not enter your real name, NDIS number, or date of birth at this stage. Those details are added only at the final PDF download step, where they go directly into your document without being sent to our servers.
Step 2: Create a new case
After verifying your email, you will arrive at your Dashboard. This is where all your cases are listed.
Click + New case to begin.
Give your case a label — this is just for your own reference and is never uploaded. You might use something like:
- Case A
- Mum
- Client 01
- John — review June 2026
Click Start assessment to proceed to the input screen.
Support Coordinators: You can create a separate case for each of your clients. All cases are saved in your browser and are only visible to you on your device.
Step 3: Describe daily life across the 12 I-CAN domains
This is the most important step. ICANReady guides you through all 12 I-CAN domains one at a time, with plain-language prompts to help you describe the support needs in each area.
The 12 domains are:
- Self-Care
- Daily Life Activities
- Communication
- Mobility
- Interpersonal Interactions and Relationships
- Learning and Education
- Employment
- Health and Wellbeing
- Social and Community Participation
- Home and Living
- Positive Behaviour Support
- Support Coordination
For each domain, you will see:
- A plain-language explanation of what the domain covers
- 3 to 4 guiding questions to help you think about what to describe
- A text box to write your description in your own words
- A support frequency selector (Never / Sometimes / Often / Always)
How to write effective descriptions
The quality of your preparation document depends on the detail you provide. Here is what makes a strong description versus a weak one:
Less effective:
"He needs help with things."
More effective:
"He cannot shower or dress independently due to right-side weakness following his stroke. He requires full physical assistance for showering every day, including help with washing, drying, and dressing. Without this support he is at risk of falls and skin breakdown."
The key is to be specific: describe what the person can and cannot do, how often support is needed, what happens without support, and any safety risks involved.
What if a domain does not apply?
If a domain is not relevant — for example, if the person has no behaviours of concern and Positive Behaviour Support does not apply — you can select Not applicable and move on. ICANReady will handle that domain appropriately in the document.
Saving your progress
Your progress is automatically saved to your browser as you move through the domains. If you need to stop and come back later, click Save & Exit at any time. Your case will appear on your Dashboard when you return.
Step 4: Submit for analysis
Once you have completed all 12 domains, click Submit for analysis.
ICANReady will send your descriptions to our AI system, which analyses them against the I-CAN v6 framework and produces a structured preparation document. This usually takes 20 to 40 seconds.
You will see a progress indicator while the analysis runs. Do not close the browser tab during this time.
Step 5: Review your results
When the analysis is complete, you will see your Assessment Results page. This shows:
Overall Summary A 2 to 3 sentence summary of the participant's support needs across all domains.
12 Domain Cards Each domain is shown with:
- A support level rating (Level 1 — Minimal to Level 5 — Very High)
- An I-CAN statement ("With appropriate support, the participant is able to...")
- Full document content describing functional limitations, specific examples, support requirements, and safety considerations
Free preview: If you are using ICANReady's free plan, you will see support level ratings for all 12 domains and full document content for 3 domains. The remaining domains are previewed — you can unlock the complete document with a credit.
Step 6: Edit your document
Before downloading, you can edit any part of the document to make sure it accurately reflects the participant's situation.
To edit a domain, click the Edit button on any domain card. You can change:
- Support level — adjust the rating using the dropdown if you believe the AI assessment does not reflect the true level of need
- I-CAN statement — refine the formal statement if needed
- Document content — add detail, correct inaccuracies, or adjust the language
You can also edit the Overall Summary at the top of the results page.
All edits are saved automatically to your browser. Your edited version will be used when you generate your PDF.
Tip: If you are a Support Coordinator or Behaviour Support Practitioner, reviewing and refining the document content is an important step. The AI provides a strong starting point, but your professional knowledge of the participant's situation will improve the final document.
Step 7: Unlock the complete document
If you are on the free plan and want to download the complete 12-domain document, click Unlock complete document and purchase a credit.
Pricing:
- 1 document: AUD $49
- 5 documents: AUD $199
- 15 documents: AUD $549
After purchasing, your complete document will unlock immediately. No need to re-run the analysis.
Step 8: Download your PDF
When you are ready to download, click Download as PDF.
A screen will appear asking you to enter the participant's personal details:
- Full name (optional)
- Date of birth (optional)
- NDIS number (optional)
- Date prepared (auto-filled with today's date)
- Prepared by (optional — useful for Support Coordinators)
These details are added directly to your PDF in your browser. They are never sent to our servers or stored anywhere.
Click Generate PDF to download your document.
What to do with your document
Your ICANReady preparation document is designed to help you prepare for your formal I-CAN v6 assessment with an accredited assessor. Here are some ways to use it:
Before your assessment:
- Review the document with your Support Coordinator or a trusted person
- Use the I-CAN statements and domain descriptions to practise describing your support needs out loud
- Bring a printed or digital copy to your assessment as a reference
During your assessment:
- You are not required to hand the document to the assessor, but you may choose to share it as context
- Use it as a prompt if you find it difficult to remember specific examples under pressure
After your assessment:
- If you are not satisfied with the outcome, your preparation document — along with any supporting evidence you gathered — may be useful in a review or appeal process
